Kannawidan: Where the past and the future collide

 

        Ilocos Sur is celebrating its 205th founding anniversary with a week-long festival called Kannawidan Ylocos, which is expected to bring thousands of local and international visitors. The Kannawidan Ylocos Festival has grown into an annual event with the goal of raising awareness about the need to preserve the rich cultural heritage, customs, and traditions of the province while also showcasing its various agricultural and industrial goods. Every person living in the province understands the importance of this festival because it commemorates the establishment of Ilocos Sur as a province by royal decree on February 2, 1818.

        With Gov. Jerry Singson and the Ilocos Sur indigenous people leading the customary opening rite, the Ilocos Sur Kannawidan Festival gets underway in full force. The event highlights Ilocos Sur's rich legacy, tradition, culture, arts, crafts, and cuisine. Locals restored customs that Ilocano elders passed down during the annual Kannawidan Holiday, but this 2023's commemoration of the festival in the province gave it a deeper meaning. The traditional opening serves as identification proof that we have developed a culture throughout the years and will continue to move forward. The Kannawidan (local slang for traditional practice) event was also an opportunity to support Ilocano culture and commemorate sons and daughters of Ilocos Sur who brought glory to their families.

        Two centuries have taught us a lesson that as a province, we must continue to build on our illustrious history in order to achieve an even more illustrious future. Let's remember, and let's be proud to be Ilocos Sur-ians, as we stroll and celebrate our province's independence together as the beginning of our journey.
